Bird Food For Robins - What Do They Like To Eat?

Picture
Robins are very curious birds that can be fun to attract to your backyard.

The North American Robin mainly eats earth worms and grubs, and they love your lawn after a rain.  You see them hop around the grass with their head cocked to one side just waiting to catch that worm that is near the surface.

Meal Worms are Like Candy to a Robin!

But that is not all they eat.  They also love fruits, such as grapes, and pieces of apple and nuts as well.  They will also peck at a bit of cheese if you have any.

Try to stay away from bread as it tends to be empty calories for birds.

But if you really want to be entertained by Robins, then put out a tray of meal worms.  This is like candy to them.

You could put this out in an open tray feeder and make sure there is a bird bath near by as they drink a lot of water and love to bathe.  They are a larger bird but can still be fun to watch in your yard as they hop around and try to fill their beaks with treats!.

you would love to attract more Robins to your yard, then make sure there is a fresh bird bath or tray of water for them to splash in and drink from, and some tidbits of food they would enjoy.

If you don't have any meal worms, no worries, look around your kitchen and try a variety of snacks.  Nuts, or seeds, as well as fruit and bits of cheese make a great snack for them.

You can get meal worms online and these are a great source of protein for them especially in the spring when they are nesting.  It is fun to watch them gather as many meal worms as they can in their beak to take back to their nest.  They will come back for more, so why not have some on hand?  Other larger birds such as woodpeckers, and blue jays enjoy these too.

I would use an open tray bird feeder if you want to make it a bit more formal of a feeder or simply place the goodies around the yard.

It can be fun to attract all kinds of birds to your yard.  I had all kinds of feeders for smaller chickadees and finches but then I noticed the bigger birds wanting in on the action, so a larger open tray style feeder such as the one above, works great for sunflower seeds, nuts, peanuts, and especially meal worms.

Hang this where you can see it from your window and it won't take long for Robins to notice the lovely treats you have left out for them.  They have been known to become quite tame, and may come closer to you if you have some meal worms nearby.

In Ontario, Canada, where I live, the robins migrate south for the winter, but come back super early in spring.  Many times there is still snow on the ground and the ground is still frozen, worms are not active yet, so you see them picking at dried apples and berries that have stayed on bushes and trees over the winter.  I love to get some meal worms out for them as this is a very difficult time for them.  Something to keep in mind, as robins do not eat bird seed, but are meat and fruit eaters.
