Homemade Bird Suet Recipe
Recipe
Lets Get On with the Recipe!! It is super easy once you get started. The main problem I had was coming up with containers, but the kit above provides the silicone containers so there is not the greasy mess.
I made the mistake of using the plastic containers the blueberries came in forgetting they had vent holes in the bottom. Some of the grease oozed out onto the counter, so these kits make cleanup and storage a breeze and can be used over and over again.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED:
4 x cups of your favourite bird seed
2 x cups of a blend of corn meal and oats
3 x cups of melted assorted fat or combination such as lard, bacon fat, peanut butter (check out video)
mix. In the video, she lays it out on a baking sheet, to cut later to fit suet feeders, but you can put it into anything you wish.

This is the video I used when I started making my very own homemade bird suet. You can change some of the fats based on what you have in the house, so use this video as a guide. But I do highly recommend you have some decent containers that you can dedicate to this project, or purchase the suet kit above.
This is not only better for your birds, it is a great way to get the kids involved. I did notice when feeding my birds that any of the suet with peanut butter in it went first! Just something to keep in mind. You can use the cheapo stuff from the grocery store for this project. But many birds love peanuts!

This is something kids can help with. You as the adult should soften the fats but the mixing and organizing can be done by kids.
A great way to show them how to enjoy backyard friends, even the squirrels! By making your own, you know exactly what is in it. I personally get a jar of super cheap peanut butter for this project. You don't need to be using your high end quality name brand, just find a NO NAME brand. But from personal experience they are attracted to the peanut butter ingredient.

You can get some really cute suet feeders that are also squirrel proof for your yard. These are great feeders in the cold weather as it gets harder for your fine feathered friends to get the nutrition they need. You will be doing them a favour and you get to enjoy the life in your yard. Just click the picture or the link to find out more.
The video above can help you make homemade bird suet to really attract nice birds to your yard. You can make a large batch and keep in the refrigerator all winter long.

This kit contains special containers and instructions on saving different fats from your cooking, such as bacon fat, suet, lard or whatever fat you use that will harden in the refrigerator. Then add seeds and push them out. Instant suet cakes!
This is a great idea instead of tins and other containers that get shoved in the fridge for storing hardening fats. Simply pour them in these molds and once you accumulate enough, add seeds and nuts and you are done!
