How to Make a Toilet Paper Roll Bird Feeder
Don't throw out those empty toilet rolls, they can be used for so many crafts. It is nice when things can have a second use and especially something as enjoyable as watching birds.
These bird feeders work best in the colder weather when birds have a hard time finding nutritional foods for energy and the fat won't go rancid. Just because you live in town doesn't mean you can't attract all kinds of birds to your yard no matter how small it is. These little feeders are easy to make, although they can get messy if kids are involved so cover the table!
Here is what you will need:
Softened lard, or use peanut butter
your favourite bird seed
a way to spread the fat
a paper puncher (to punch holes for the twine)
twine
empty toilet rolls or use empty paper towel rolls you cut in half.
Method:
Check out the video below.

This is a Really Cool Family Fun Craft
I really love the bird seed that has sunflower seeds mixed in, this will attract many birds even it is a variety mixture. You can get mixed bird seed in grocery stores, hardware stores or even online at Amazon. It all depends on the birds you want to attract. If just any bird, then a good quality mix of seeds, if you want gold finches, you can get gold finch seeds.
This is a great way to use up everyday household items. You can also get more creative and make something out of cardboard that you have left from cereal boxes. You could create a house and then cover it with the fat and seeds and hang it outside too.
Or check out the page on making Edible bird feeders for even more ideas. You can also take pine cones and make them into quick feeders for the birds and the squirrels.
Create some action in the yard this winter!

This is also something different to try if you are making your own bird feeders and are tired of buying grocery store suet cakes.
This is special mold that you accumulate your hardening fats in. For example, if you fry up bacon each week, simply pour the fat into these molds instead of empty cans (like I do!!). Keep adding to it, and then follow the instructions for adding seeds and putting them outside in the winter months. A great way to store your own fats.
