Wild Bird Feeders - Tray Style

Picture
Wild Bird Feeders
Larger birds such as cardinals and blue jays much prefer open feeding areas.  They don't seem to do as well perching on multi-layer bird towers or typical feeders as they would have to balance, which usually sends it swinging around.

If you like the idea of attracting all birds, then you should have an area for your smaller birds and also a few bird feeder trays that you can hang from trees or posts for the wilder birds.   This can bring a whole new level of visitors to your yard.

Birds Choice 22X22 Seed Catcher Open Platform
My son made me a wooden one years ago and I was amazed at just how many large birds love to be able to use an open feeder.  It eventually had to be replaced, and I went online and found great deals for open tray feeders.  These will attract a lot of birds especially the larger ones that don't do so well with a perch like on the other style of feeders.
WildBird Care Platform Hanging Bird Feeder Multi-use BCF3B (Natural Color)
It is best to not overfill this style of feeder as it will be more open to the elements, but it is perfect for your homemade bird food.  Just spread it out daily if you can and you will be amazed at just how many larger birds will come to this feeder, but the little guys will too!
Backyard Boys Woodworking GS26GR Large Platform Feeder, Green
It is nice to give them a variety and also don't forget to give them fresh water.  If birds have everything they need in your yard they will stick around.  It amazed me just how many more beautiful birds such as cardinals and blue jays I received in my yard when I offered a wild bird feeder such as a tray style feeder.  There is plenty of room for them to grab and go or sit a while.   If you add meal worms as a special treat you will get Robins and any other grub eater.    I have found most supplies online.

Feeding many different birds can be fun.  You can create a feeding station in one part of your yard for your birds, and another station for the squirrels.  Yes, the squirrels, it can be better to work with them and give them their very own fun feeders in order to create peace and harmony in your yard.   Check out funny squirrel feeders to get some ideas.  For the cost of a back of cracked corn or peanuts they will be entertained enough to stay away from your bird feeders.   This seems to work in my yard.
